Review of The Sheik (1921) by Laura N — 19 Feb 2009
I watched this so I could see what all the hubbub was about concerning Valentino. And frankly, I just really didn't see it. I think part of my problem is that in order to convey as much meaning as possible, Valentino had to exaggerate his expressions.
So when he was probably trying to look enthusiastic and intent....he just came off looking creepy. I also had a serious problem with the reveal at the end that, NO, he wasn't really an Arab....his parents were Europeans who died and he was raised as an Arab.
I know it was 1921...so I take it with a grain of salt...but it still bugged me. And let's not even get into the sexism.....
