Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Vasco M — 19 Feb 2018
'The Shape Of Water' feels like the realization of a del Toro fan-fiction that spawned somewhere between Hellboy and Pacific Rim. The drawback is that not much of the movie feels original. and most of the rest seems staged and overly dramatized, going out of its way to break my suspension of disbelief.
The stars of the show are the romantic focus of the story: they do an amazing job of feeling authentic and passionate, making the bizarre love aspect my absolute favourite part of the film. It's kind of sad though that it was so underutilized.
Either way, the movie does a good enough job of not being a wreck, and amid all the cliche cutout characters and the eye-roll-inducing quoting of Bible verses, there's a decent, heartwarming story.
