I went into this expecting to not like it. I tend to find Guillermo del Toro's movies to be too strange and not that interesting.
But I really enjoyed this. There were several very strong acting performances, including both Sally Hawkins (she was able to communicate so much without words) and Octavia Spencer.
The movie was interesting and touching.
