Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Kevin P — 28 Apr 2018
I can only assume that those who did not rate this movie at 4 or 5 stars, just did not understand it. It is deep and unusual unlike so many moves. If you aren't a deep thinker, it could go over you.
This story is a wonderful expiration of differences. -The creature who is different from anything people have ever seen, hence people don't know what to do with it. -The woman who lives in a world of silent muteness so people don't know just how to deal with her. -The bonding of the creature and woman that simple goes outside all realms of understanding.
Then there is the more familiar. -The workmate who simply accepts the woman as she is without question or judgment. -The main antagonist who thinks in such a monolithic, prejudicial, and judgmental manner that he embarrasses us when we see too much of ourselves in him.
Maybe that last element partly explains why the movie wasn't liked by some; they see the clear monstrosity of the antagonist and are so uncomfortable to find that he is the character that naturally relate to the most.
I cannot leave a review of this movie without noting the beauty of the final song. I had never heard "You'd Never Know" before. Now I've played it many times. Such a fusion of classic jazz, lyrics that fall just out of beat yet artistically so, the melody that is fluid like water, the sultry voice of the singer. I set through the whole of the credits just to listen to this song.
