Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Michael J — 31 Dec 2017
The Shape of Water was an enjoyable fantasy. Sally Hawkins did a great job of conveying her thoughts and feelings without any words. Michael Shannon was the standard movie villain, but he also added a sense of vulnerability around his need to please authority, no matter what it might require.
Surprisingly enough, even the creature was able to communicate emotion. The creature makeup was excellent. Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer also did a fine job as the other key people in Elisa's life.
Although the movie was quite good, it didn't hit the excellent mark. The fantasy element of the film was well done, but it also didn't draw me into the characters as much as I would have liked.
I remained an external viewer of what was definitely a beautifully staged film, but my mind never left the theater and joined the cast.
