The Shape of Water is a very artistic movie that seems more like Oscar bait. Though the story keeps people invested in the movie, the entire story is so lackluster. The protagonist isn't a character that you find anything relatable to, but her attempt to find true love in the fish-man that lay in front of her.
Sally Hawkins's performance is stellar, along with the Directing by Guillermo del Toro, but the premise is not "absorbing," like the consensus of critics. The film was a nice spectacle, but without a strong story line, it falls flat, attempting to be saved by visuals, acting, and directing.
