Review of The Seven Year Itch (1955) by Joe T — 20 Oct 2009
An odd little film that carries so much iconography, I was shocked to discover how simple and strange the actual thing is. wilder makes inventive use of fantasy sequences and cross dissolves to tell the story of middle-aged american male meat and potatoes horniness.
monroe is effervescent, though tom ewell carries the film, often for long stretches where we merely watch him react to his own voiceover. in the scope of billy wilder films, this is a trifle (and warm-up to 'some like it hot'), but still a must-see for its perfect use of marilyn's distinct charm.
