Review of The Seven Year Itch (1955) by Paul J — 08 Sep 2011
One of the definitive Monroe movies. Wilder has made better films, but it's worth watching if only for the Monroe. She oozes sexuality. This was the movie that catapulted her into stardom. The famous moment when her dress blows up was initially shot in the streets in front of a huge crowd.
Her husband at that time was Joe DiMaggio. He watched in humiliation as they did take after take. Shortly thereafter they got a divorce. That moment may have instigated their divorce but it not only made her career but become symbolic of all things "Hollywood.
" (Ironically, they didn't end up using any of the footage, instead they re-shot in a studio.) Ultimately, this movie is very silly and it's undoubtedly making fun of a male fantasy. Wilder wanted to cast Walter Matthau and this would have been a much better choice.
But if you can get past its faults, The Seven Year Itch paved the way for more frank and adult material on the silver screen.
