Review of The Searchers (1956) by Larry L — 17 Aug 2010
A John Wayne movie that did not suck! and John Wayne is actually acting! what the hell is going on here? Buy anyway, The searchers is a western that I would classify as great. However you can only look at it this way if you get over the cheese factor.
Actors in these days were incredibly corny, most of them anyway. They make awkward facial expressions and Wayne was probably the king of it, also the king of one liners. When I got over that I really enjoyed the film, however I did not like all of it.
People would talk about how incredible the cinematography is, however I noticed that some of the scenes in the desert looked like they were shooting on a set, the sky looked like it was made of plastic.
I already mentioned the acting but it's not that hard to overlook. The dialogue is not very witty even though it tries to be. Wayne saying stuff like " that'll be the day", it might be a little humorous because he was probably one of the worst at evoking emotion.
The strongest part of the film is the story, the story is so great that it truly makes the movie.
