Review of The Searchers (1956) by Jason H — 10 Mar 2011
An amazingly powerful film which more than earns it's reputation as the best western film of all time...however it is much more than that. If your idea of a western is just cowboy and Indian fighting or a long build-up to a shoot out then you have no idea the potential of the western setting and time period.
John Wayne is the ultimate anti-hero. He does some rotten things and says some rotten things...but it is an honest character and we care more for him, and see ourselves most in him than we do any goody-goody western cowboy in the movies.
In fact all of the characters are easy to care about despite flaws as well as very complex...something we dont see much of in westerns. The complexities of this movie are many and still relevant. The scenery is great and the cinematography is amazing.
The fact is...this is one of the best movies I have ever seen and words cannot justify it. Some will stay away from it for various reasons which is unfortunate, for they do themselves a disservice by skipping this film.
A flat out amazing movie.
