Review of The Searchers (1956) by Jack G — 28 May 2011
Rewatched for the first time in years. I think if you cut out some of the comedy relief (that one guy who does the annoying Indian-call stuff and makes stupid comments) it would be one of the very best films ever made.
As it stands it's still really damn impressive, with Wayne's best performance (which is saying more for the character - and the fact that the movie calls out bullshit on Wayne's usual super-tough "man's gotta do what he's gotta do" persona - and Ford's direction than the man's talent himself who was overrated) and some of the most haunting cinematography ever set in an old-West setting.
And beautiful music score too, especially with the song over that last shot.
