Review of The Searchers (1956) by Isaac M — 05 Nov 2011
Perhaps the best among the classic westerns I've ever seen. I was struck by the sad and tragic story and by the endurance of men searching for years to rescue the last in their family. It's perhaps John Wayne's best acting role, and John Ford was one of the better directors in the 50s at getting a strong supporting cast (something that could not be said for the original "True Grit").
The film does suffer from some awkward pacing, and the music can take one out of an otherwise moving moment from time to time. Despite these flaws common to films in the 50s, "The Searchers" will stand out in my memory for a long time, and I'm sure I'll watch it again.
