Review of The Searchers (1956) by Brian L — 17 Dec 2011
The best western EVER made. John Ford captures the complexity of a deeply-troubled man. John Wayne's Ethan Edwards is a compelling study in vengeance and perserverance. His redemption is fantastic; his violent way of life saves the day but he is not welcomed in the new community (or family) that his violence has served so well.
I saw this film for the first time when I was about ten and it utterly captivated me then...Over the years it has become a perennial favorite and every time I see it I see something new. Pay particular attention to the doorway motif; there are entrances and exit doorways throughout the film which mirror Ethan's journey.
