Review of The Searchers (1956) by Hiatt N — 23 Jul 2012
This is one of the only films to ever perfectly mix the three strengths of cinema: art, literature, and entertainment. To try to assign The Searchers a category is pointless. At first, we think 'art'.
The incredible imagery of Monument Valley has never been bettered, and the beauty of the shots are such that we can't tear our eyes away. Then we think 'literature', because really, what else can you call the clear but understated affection between Ethan and Martha and the complexity of Ethan's character? But this is one of the most entertaining films ever made, and anyone that thinks otherwise should listen to the tough-guy diaglogue and watch the incredible gun battles.
So what is The Searchers? The Searchers is fundamental cinema, and has yet to be bettered.
