Review of The Scarlet Letter (1995) by David F — 30 Nov 2008
I wanted to see for myself how bad this was, being a fan of the novel. It didn't disappoint on that score. I knew I was in trouble when the credits read "Freely adapted from the novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne" - this would include a climatic Indian attack, accusations of witchcraft, a happy ending and a oh-so-Hollywood-sensibility about how a heroine placed in Puritan times naturally rebels against male repression via an all too laughable feminist/sexual awakening subtext.
The only one that comes out well is Oldman - Moore and Duvall do not make convincing Englishpeople at all. Boy howdy, did this stink. Read the book and try to understand the time it was written in!
