Review of The Sand Pebbles (1966) by Keith T — 21 Jul 2008
For some reason, I had always assumed this to be some sort of Hollywood remake of the excellent British film "Yangze Incident" and have avoided it for years. With ITV4 having just recently run a Steve McQueen season, I've finally watched it. I now realise that THIS film is set 25 years BEFORE HMS Amethyst had her own little "local difficulty". While I remain to be convinced that The Sand Pebbles wasn't inspired by the question of "how can we redo that one using mainly American actors", it is in fact an excellent film in its own right.
Indeed, the presence of both Steve McQueen and Richard Attenborough to some degree assure it will be class throughout, which it is.
