Review of The Sand Pebbles (1966) by Richard D — 26 Feb 2013
I think because this was a widescreen technicolor flick directed by Robert Wise, I always thought that "The Sand Pebbles" was a very different kind of movie than it turns out to be. I was thinking it would be more of an epic.
It's a pretty gritty film that feature one of McQueen's best performances. It's not a truly great film. Like a lot of films based on long novels, the narrative often feels kind of choppy. Also, I thought Candice Bergen is not particularly good in this film.
Trash film fans take note: Thai actress Marayat Andriane, who has a very large part in this film, is the real world Emmanuelle.
