Review of The Sacrifice (1986) by Alexander J — 08 Sep 2007
Finally got a chance to see Tarkovsky's last picture he made before his death in 1986. The print was old, pale colours and scratches all over the place. Maybe it had an influence on my viewing experience, since "The Sacrifice" was a tedious experience.
It's not the length, it's more so the topic of an old man sacrificing himself for the good of mankind. I've read a lot about Tarkovsky's religious motives and good intentions with this movie, but I somewhat feel betrayed.
Although an atomic catastrophe acts as a cataclysm, the doom and gloom does not really convince me. I have a high opinion of Tarkovsky, but this movie somewhat disappointed me. If it wasn't for Nykvist 's cinematography, it'd all just be a chamber stage play with ultralong monologues (it's Tarkovsky's "talkiest" movie) and dead pauses.
Also, the Swedish dubbing of Susan Fleetwood was terrible - talking about not-so-much being in sync... See for yourself what I mean.
