Review of The Sacrifice (1986) by Anna R — 24 Sep 2009
Admittedly the theatrical style of this devilishly slow piece is sometimes harmful from an access point of view. But the sheer integrity of Tarkovsky's art is clear and the dimensions he works in are unfounded; resulting in scenes of the utmost beauty and poetry of the highest order.
The sacrifice is a mature, if a little Bergman-esque semi-biopic of great splendour that transcends emotional barriers and speculates unsettling ideas around hope, faith and madness. Upsettingly, it was Tarkosky's final film.
