Review of The Sacrifice (1986) by Eric G — 29 Nov 2003
First and foremost, Nykvist and Tarkovsky make a great combination as cinematographer/director. I haven't seen enough Tarkovsky to be 100 percent sure about this, but it seems that Tarkovsky isn't worried about a narrative or plot so to say.
He creates his message through intense dialogue, imagery, and atmosphere, all three of which he creates masterfully. Overall, The Sacrifice is very bleak and pessimistic as it deals with the certainty of WWIII and nuclear destruction.
But it's overall message, I think, may be to live in harmony with everyone and everything at all times and in this case it is a very positive, enlightening movie. Great stuff, though, if you can sit through it.
It's certainly not for everyone.
