Review of The Ruling Class (1972) by John E — 05 Aug 2010
Utterly bizarre satire/melodrama/horror/black comedy/musical that is as schizophrenic as its main character. Peter O'Toole's performance is incredible and a little unsettling in its effectiveness.
The film jumps all over the place in terms of tone and scene transition, but this is expected since JC frequently blurs the line between reality and aberrant fantasy. I really enjoyed the trenchant yet ambiguous critique of society and people's foibles.
With a little polish, this could have been a classic, but it is still quite the accomplishment for its sheer creative uniqueness and bold temerity for attacking high society.
