Review of The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) by Jillian L — 22 Feb 2012
So, I'll just say right off the bat, if you're looking for a normal, albeit quirky comedy, along the lines of normal Wilson/Stiller movies, you're looking in the wrong place. Now, that being said, that isn't actually a bad thing.
Yes, very quirky, and at times quite funny, but mostly, what this movie has is heart. An amazing ensemble cast led by Gene Hackman, all the acting performances in this movie are top notch. Anjelica Huston and Danny Glover can always be relied on for great performances.
Ben Stiller and the Wilson brothers took this chance to stray away from the normal types of comedies they do, and they did a fantastic job. Gwyneth Paltrow was almost unrecognizable, as Margot, the character who does not crack a smile the entire film.
I'm not even kidding. Also, the visual style is really cool. It is obvious that Anderson wanted it to look like the family was all stuck in the 70s-a time when all the kids were at their best. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie, that is yes, a little quirky and eccentric, but one that movie lovers should not miss.
