Review of The Rose Tattoo (1955) by Christina C — 15 Mar 2008
Classic Tennessee Williams fare: sweltering locations, sexual repression, gloriously poetic dialogue. There are moments of realism and moments of over-the-top staginess (the ending, for example): a somewhat uneven effort.
Burt - bless him - gives a rare misjudged performance: his Alvaro Mangiacavello is a bit too buffoonish, perhaps suited better for the stage. However, Anna Magnani simply blows the screen away - this is the first film I've seen her in and cannot wait to see more.
What a woman.
