Review of The Rose Tattoo (1955) by Jennifer B — 18 Dec 2009
Anna Magnani is a tour-de-force magnet of this film, holding it together and carrying us with her as she experiences the mysterious loss of her husband and the secrets he kept from her and encounters a man a lot like him in Burt Lancaster while dealing with her teenage daughter who is ashamed of her mother.
Magnani gives such a passionate performance as Seraphina della Rosia that you cannot hand anyone else that Best Actress Oscar for the year of 1955. Jo Van Fleet makes a small appearance as a snooty woman who tells Seraphina her husband's secret and Virginia Grey plays her dead husband's mistress.
You cannot pass up this movie if you are a fan of Tennessee Williams.
