Review of The Rose (1979) by David S — 24 Mar 2013
I'm not gonna lie, this film was a chore to get through. Midler, playing a Joplin-like singer, is pretty fantastic, when she's on the stage. But that's also the problem, is that the concert scenes go on far too long and there's far too many of them. Maybe 40 minutes is concert scenes. It adds nothing to the plot.
The rest is just her fighting and screaming at either her booking agent or the two men in her life. None of it was very interesting.
And that ending...kind of laughable no? And seriously...they bookend the film in that garage: why? Who had all those pictures? A stalker, one of the boyfriends, Midler herself, who?????
