Review of The Robe (1953) by Matthew B — 25 Feb 2009
This movie tries hard to be a lot of things to a lot of people, and consequently is something of a mess. One minute, it's a stately religious drama, the next it turns inexplicably into a Robin Hood-esque swashbuckler.
.. except Richard Burton is no Errol Flynn. Not by a longshot. Most of the other performances are decidedly wooden, except for Jean Simmons as Diana and Klaatu, er... I mean Michael Rennie as Peter. Though Alfred Newman contributes one of his most memorable scores, this is definitely not one of the better swords and sandals epics out there.
