Review of The Robe (1953) by Joe L — 23 Sep 2009
It's essentially the 'rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead' storytelling model applied to the jesus crucifixion story - which is not an uninteresting conceit, though the execution is a bit overlong and overwrought.
epic with a captial 'e,' it's probably most noteworthy for being the first feature in cinemascope widescreen format. the bluray shows off every detail in the period photgraphy, as well as every brushstroke in the matte paintings.
it doesn't live up to its ambition, but is quite watchable if religious 'historical' epics are your thing.
