Review of The Robe (1953) by Matt M — 02 Nov 2013
A Roman tribune sent to order Christ's crucifixion wins his robe by gambling underneath the dying saviour. Soon enough, he starts to believe that the robe is cursed and is responsible for his outbursts of violence.
20th Century Fox used this epic to introduce the revolutionary CinemaScope technique. The film is quite spectacular technically speaking, with Henry Koster taking fulladvantage of the new technique to create a spectacular vision that only occasionally feels machinated despite its novelty.
The performances are good.
