Review of The River Thief (2016) by Lauren M — 12 Oct 2016
The River Thief staring Tommy Cash, Joel Courtney, and Raleigh Cain was excellent.
I went to this expecting to be lightheartedly entertained, but instead found myself captivated.
I got caught up in the suspense and genuinely cared for the characters. While this movie is good/mature enough to be enjoyed by a broad adult audience, I especially noted what a great family movie it is (for older kids).
Our 11 and 9 year old sons were also captivated by the suspense, and enjoyed the funny parts that peppered the first third or so of the movie.
The film is fast paced but yet detailed enough that the viewer doesn't get keeping up with the story.
The characters are believable in their vulnerability and desperation; the evil is palpable but not explicit. Great discussion points for parents and kids.
I especially appreciated the confident strength of the granddaughter and grandfather. At one point the female lead attributed that confidence to the love shown her by her grandpa--my favorite character. His strength was in his deep peace, shown particularly in that he was repeatedly "slow to anger"; further that strength contrasted well with that of the two main bad guys.
This is a film we definitely plan to own so can watch it again and again with our kids as they grow, and layers of the film become more understandable to them.
