Review of The Right Stuff (1983) by Steve K — 23 Jun 2011
Riveting, from the opening prologue to the surreal scene in the Astrodome, The Right Stuff moves along smartly with an incredible ensemble cast and a story that's amazing in the fact that it was somehow never told before on film.
With nearly no violence and only the hint of sex we're fortunate that this movie was made when it was -- it could never be green-lighted today. You don't need to know, or care, about the early days of our space program to enjoy this film.
Behind the cool exteriors of the astronauts and the cheerleading of the press we are told the real story of space travel in its infancy -- mainly that we got into it out of fear (how American) and that the U.
S. pretty much wrote the rules as the game was being played. Telling the astronauts' wives side and what they suffered through is compelling. A must-see film and yes, one of the top ten movies of all time.
