It's one of those Patriotic films about the early days of the space program that other films did better later on. In this you will see elements of films like Apollo 13 and Top Gun.

It centers around the lives of these seven men who went above and beyond. They are all a bunch of kids really. All their personalities are so similar that it becomes difficult to tell them apart. Even with a three hour running time I still don't feel like I knew them that well except for maybe Ed Harris' character and he doesn't even come in till about the halfway point.

The comedic bits in this film are more awkward than funny. They don't really fit in well with the rest of the film and it fells like a second director came in for those scenes. Also there is a poorly dubbed Mexican in the film which just comes off as insulting.

But there are some really good moments of this film. It opens up with them trying to break the sound barrier; and the fears and difficulties in that task.

It's one of those films that your grandparents would probably like, provided that they can pay attention for that long.

It has its moments, but those moments have been done better in other films.
