Review of The Rescuers Down Under (1990) by Zachary S — 26 Jan 2013
Can is be? A sequel that manages to surpass it's predecessor?
The Rescuers Down Under does 2 very important things in order to better the first film. First up is a much better story that makes more sense and is more to the point. Second is a drastic improvement in the animation.
This sequel doesn't have the standard Disney songs which may or may not be a good thing. I guess it would depend on whether or not you are a fan of said songs. It's not that the film couldn't have worked with them but I think after the poor song choices in the first film, removing them rather than trying to make better ones might have been the best choice.
The one aspect that I think Rescuers did better than this sequel is in the rescuee. The little girl Penny was just adorable while Cody seems a bit too efficient to truly need helping. Sure he's a child but the film could have easily been just about Cody and him being able to do everything himself. The Rescuers in the end, didn't do much rescuing when all was said and done.
Still a wonderful return to a series I wish would get another feature film. The characters are wonderful and their mission, truly heartfelt.
