Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Becky K — 13 Sep 2008
As depressing and sorrowful of a movie as there ever was, The Remains of the Day is the story of a dedicated English butler in the 1930's who clashes with and ever so sublty develops feelings for the estate's housekeeper.
Not so much as romance at all, as it is more of a straightforward period drama, and a very elegantly made one at that..especially coming from director James Ivory. Anthony Hopkins is in top form as the butler who has sacrificed body and soul for his work.
It's heartbreaking, but very rich and textured in its depiction of the time and the conflicted people who live in it.
