Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Sean M — 28 Apr 2008
A masterpiece, whatever Christopher Guest may think. Fluid, resonant filmmaking by James Ivory, far more focused and precise than the unsympathetic Howards End of the previous year. Hopkins and Thompson create a private, almost erotic tension against a backdrop of the political disintegration of England's dying aristocracy before WWII.
Great stuff from that lost age, a decade ago, when filmmakers still knew what they were doing.
