Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Chris M — 25 Feb 2011
I'm not a period drama sort of guy. However, in this film's case I'll make an exception. I tried to read the book a few years ago, but I was a child and preferred such literary wonders such as Sue Townsend's Adrian Mole books! Shocking.
In short, this is one of the most wonderfully acted and beautifully directed films I have ever seen. If anyone can show me two more understated and perfect performances than those of Hopkins and Thompson I'd like to see them.
Peter Vaughn and James Fox also sparkle, while for me, it was sad to see Christopher Reeve appear in a role that came seldom to him as he was superb in the small role of Lewis. Hugh Grant also does well in a role right before he hit superstardom with Four Weddings & a Funeral.
The Remains of the Day might not to be to everyone's liking at first. I had heard about how incredible the book was and have always been interested in seeing this and vaguely knew what it was about.
However, I'm sure if you come into this film with an open mind and truly dedicate yourself to this masterpiece, you'll be rewarded in more ways than you can imagine.Perfect.
