This being a Merchant-Ivory production, the film moves at its own pace and gives a premium towards the characters over the storyline. Hopkins', as the distant Mr. Stevens,.
Is superb and his character's motivations are endlessly fascinating. The scene where Mrs. Kenton playfully confronts him over his reading material is an astounding.
Piece of acting, on Hopkins' part, conveying his character's tragic sense of shame.
