Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by John935 — 29 Jun 2020
In 2020 I finally saw this picture for my second time. It is an immaculate production and there is much that is praiseworthy, particularly the acting. However, for me, there remains a coldness at its core which is in some ways consistent with the narrative but it deprives the film of resonance.
The political issue is also kept distant. Does the film hew too closely to the novel? Not having read it I can't say. It is a pleasure to watch but this viewer waited in vain for some emotional power.
