Review of The Reflecting Skin (1990) by Lance L — 24 Jan 2006
The Reflecting Skin is an odd little gem. It is unsettling in ways that are difficult to understand--and in some that are easy. When you see it you understand. It is a polarizing movie, but straying outside the obvious often does that.
This movie comes from a truly unique voice. It may not make sense unless you realize that it is completely from the point of view of an 8-year-old boy. A child does not understand a complex & tragic world, and the movie presents that to the viewer, with the warping of reality that comes with a child's imagination and limitations.
The director wisely counters it all with beautiful cinematography. It's not everyone's tastes, but it is well done.
