I think that the reason The Rainmaker was so successful was because Francis Ford Coppola spent most of the time on character study. He didn't waste valuable screen time on romance but more of the intersecting relations of every single character.

Matt Damon and Danny DeVito were the most impressive of the cast, and surprisingly were the highlights. Unfortunately, Danny DeVito wa severly overlooked at the Academy Awards. He was more than worthy of a Best Supporting Actor nomination.

Besides the two main stars, there was some great performances from Claire Danes, Danny Glover, and Jon Voight. The whole film had a nice story but it was obviously a huge acting powerhouse. It was a fantastic movie that was severely underrated in 1997.

It failed to recieve many big nominations but I severely hope that it becomes more appreciated on its DVD release as it deserves to.
