Coppola has occasionally been guilty of over-stylisation and overzealousness. It was certainly true of the work that preceded The Rainmaker. Here, however, he tones the style down and remains faithful to Grisham's initial work.
The approach is very refreshing and ultimately rewarding. This is the story of a good natured and struggling Memphis attorney who starts his own practice along with a colleague after his law firm goes under investigation.
Coppola builds a well measured suspense in this rendition of the bestseller in and out of the courtroom. This was also a good showcase for a young Matt Damon in the lead role.
