Review of The Quiet American (2002) by Ifty Z — 22 Dec 2007
Graham Greene´s book is untouchable, though the movie is not that good but not bad either. Taking Brandon Fraser as a serious character with a bad touch is rather difficult compared to his usual comedian roles...Michael Caine makes up for that.
Still, do read the novel first, this triangle relationship as a symbol for the political situation between Vietnam, the old Colonial rulers and the Americans at the gate - and Greene wrote this way before the US intervention - is a real masterpiece the movie cant show as good as the book does. At least this movie sticks to the authors intentions, not like the old version where the story gets turned around into a political farce of that time. The setting of the film in the real places of Saigon/HoChiMinhCity makes it even better!
