Review of The Quiet American (2002) by Doctor S — 04 Oct 2012
The Quiet American directed by Philip Noyce, adopted from the best-selling novel of same name by British Graham Greene. Starring Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser. Michael Caine received Oscar-nomination as 'Best Actor' for his role. Thomas Fowler (Caine), is war-correspondent for London Times in Saigon (Vietnam). He lives with beautiful young Vietnamese girl called Phuong (Do Thi Hai Yen), soon a young American aid-worker Pyle (Brendan Fraser) shows up in his life, with cheerful ideas for oppressed Vietnamese. Gradually Fowler figures out worst of Pyle to spread terrorism in the country so to get American involvement in the war.
I have seen dozens of films on Vietnam-War, this is moderately good one, it exposes sinister ambitions of American involvement in the war. Only Caine's performance is worth mentioning here, and it is basically satisfying. Branden Fraser was average (as usual). Interesting movie to watch, if you are too much fed-up with propaganda movies showing positive/heroic American image, of her launching chapter of Vietnam-war.
