Review of The Quick and the Dead (1995) by Nelson P — 29 Nov 2010
A western that only Sam Raimi could bring you. Its takes heavily from "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly", bordering on a remake, but the implementation of the shooting contest separated it entirely.
Its extremely stylized, but the lavish characters and story warrant such an extreme form of stylization. Gene Hackman was amazing, one of his finest villain roles. But Russell Crowe was the shining star, one of hist first roles as an ass kicker extraordinaire.
I can see why people dislike the movie, but it such harmless fun that I think if you hate this movie you're just over thinking it.
