Review of The Quick and the Dead (1995) by Daniel K — 05 Jul 2016
A predictable western, but solid acting and gunfighting make this a game western. Sharon Stone is somewhat miscast as the heroine who is out for redemption against Gene Hackman's character, who forced her into killing her father as a young girl.
Russell Crowe plays the priest who is forced by Hackman to enter the shooting contest, and Leo Dicaprio is Hackman's son who is out to prove he is better than his father. It is thoroughly enjoyable to watch this movie play homage to westerns, and it is easy to tell director Sam Raimi gets most of the plot from past Leone films.
However, it is a fun movie to watch and provides a good plot with memorable characters, such as Scars and Aces, played by the one and only Lance Henrickson. The finale is a solid finish to the film, and Hackman plays his character so well you can't wait to see how he's going to get killed.
