Review of The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) by Iris S — 06 Jan 2009
As an avid fan of the woodster, I was impressed with this film as the ultimate celebration of cinema. I enjoyed the crisp writing, original concept and deft pacing. Sometimes his films can drag but PROC doesn't waste a shot or line of dialogue.
The play on the whole 'appearance vs. reality' trick to tell the story of how dreams in celluloid don't always transfer to the everyday was clever. The concept of having a character come right 'out' of the film and into the theatre to change the life of a small town woman is so Brechtian .
Allen set the bar for movies that play with the devices and medium of cinema but of course, no filmmaker can do it like he can. This film deserves all the praise and accolades it has received over the years.
