Review of The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) by Brian C — 09 Aug 2009
Woody Allen finally stays behind the camera in this romantic comedy/fantasy. It's a nice change of pace for Woody, avoiding neurotic and pretentious characters and exchanging them for romantics and idealists -- though no less broken.
"Purple Rose of Cairo" is about escapism at the movies and the hazardous line between fiction and reality. Though silly, it drops some terrifically poignant lines like "I just met a wonderful new man.
He's fictional, but you can't have everything.".
