Review of The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) by Bob V — 30 Mar 2011
A Woody Allen film about the magic of film and make-belief and the profound effect it can have on your everyday life. Mia Farrow is wonderful and pitiful as the abused housewife whose only joy comes from watching the stars on the silver screen. One day when she sees the same film for the 6th time, one of the characters walks off the screen and begins to woo her, causing the characters left on screen to be completely lost as to what to do. In Hollywood, studio bosses, and the actor portraying the character are none too pleased either.
The unexplained magical plot is somehow very easy to swallow, perhaps because the film characters respond in such a believable manner. But the true strength of the film lies in the bittersweet, tragicomic moments, at which Farrow excels.
