Review of The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) by Stefan N — 05 Jul 2013
"The Purple Rose of Cairo" is the greatest film ever made about the reason why we watch movies and go to theaters. If you have not heard of it, the story is quite memorable. It's the great depression, Cecelia has an abusive husband, and works a painfully tiring job.
Her only escape is cinema where she falls in love with the characters, the songs, and watches the same movies repeatedly. When she sees "The Purple Rose of Cairo" for another time, the film's main character, Tom Baxter, comes off the screen and falls in love with her.
At the same time, the actor of the character, Gil Shepard, tries to get Tom Baxter back to the screen but falls in love with Cecelia. The strong point of the film is the writing which has some of the best dialogue of cinematic history, but an interesting plot as well.
Woody Allen does not just rely on the premise but continues to surprise us repeatedly. We watch movies to forget about our troubled lives. To meet characters who are more interesting than reality. However, film itself is an illusion; a collection of pictures played at 24 frames per second.
The humor is undeniably genius. For instance, Mia Farrow upon meeting Tom Baxter says "I just met a wonderful new man. He's fictional but you can't have everything." "The Purple Rose of Cairo" is Woody Allen's best comedy film and also the greatest film that shows why we love movies.
A showcase of brilliant and inventive writing filled with instantly quotable funny dialogue, and a daring ending for all feel-good movies.
