Review of The Purge: Anarchy (2014) by Shane Z — 24 Feb 2015
You may know I just posted my review of the first Purge a week before watching "Purge Anarchy." When I reviewed The Purge, I criticized it for how it went from a promising commentary social premise to a home-invasion thriller with stupid characters. Especially Charlie, played by Max Burkholder, the odd boy. It was obvious it was marketed as a new exciting horror flick with the premise (I said), Ethan Howke starring (appeared in both The Purge and Before Midnight), and a In-Joke on a "Real Purge" prepared going over Facebook, TV, huh.
"Not Really!" So after that, the announcement of "Purge Anarchy" hit to the public. This time, purging from a home-invasion thriller taking it out to the streets.
Taking place in 2023, some victims ousted from their homes struggle to survive on the streets as the annual Purge commences, but a vindictive stranger (Frank Grillo) can't turn a blind eye.
Granted, this is an improvement that doesn't evaluate anywhere near a Grade A-rating entertainment and not able to try to be as smart as it wants to be but it is still exhilarating at times...and a unwanted story in a intriuging Hostel twist it has.
If this slice of horror is meant to establish Frank Grillo in lead status, It's leading achievement.
Shane Zaborski.
