Review of The Purge (2013) by Tvjerry — 11 Jun 2013
The future America's in great shape, primarily because one nite a year anything (including murder) is legal. This leads to a "Straw Dogs" style home invasion scenario, with Ethan Hawke's family having to defend itself.
When this film is working, it's violently gripping, but there are several lags in pacing that also lack suspense. Even with the clever dystopian plot, three of the tight spots rely on the same last-minute rescue.
Still, paranoia, brutality and subversive concepts combine for a decent thriller.
